Woman Fatally Shot on CTA Red Line Platform at 69th Street After Argument
A woman was shot and killed Tuesday night following a heated argument on the CTA Red Line platform at the 69th Street station in Greater Grand Crossing, Chicago police said. The incident, which occurred around 9:46 p.m., has left authorities searching for a suspect as Area One detectives delve into the circumstances surrounding the violent encounter.
According to police, the victim—an unidentified woman believed to be between 25 and 35 years old—was engaged in a verbal dispute with another woman on the platform when the situation escalated. During the argument, the suspect drew a firearm and shot the victim in the neck before fleeing the scene. Emergency responders rushed the victim to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, where she was later pronounced dead.
In an update provided at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Chicago police announced that a person of interest is being questioned in connection with the shooting. However, no arrests have been confirmed, and the suspect remains at large. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity pending notification of her family, nor have they disclosed what sparked the altercation or whether the two women were acquainted.
Details about the suspect remain limited, though an officer at the scene described video evidence showing the shooter with dreadlocks, wearing a distinctive red leather coat with stripes on the back, blue or green pants, and white shoes. Confusion arose as some witnesses claimed the assailant was a man who had been loitering in the station lobby throughout the day, but police clarified that the suspect is female based on their investigation.
Police have not confirmed whether CTA surveillance cameras captured the shooting or if additional witnesses have come forward. The investigation is ongoing, with detectives working to piece together the events that led to the fatal confrontation on one of the city’s busiest transit lines.
The shooting has heightened concerns about safety on Chicago’s public transit system, particularly at the 69th Street station, which has seen violent incidents in recent years. As the search for the suspect continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Area One detectives or submit an anonymous tip via CPD’s hotline.
